Duolingo Russian-Spanish tree (ultimate challenge 2018 complete)

My Duolingo Russian-Spanish language challenge 2018

Does using Duolingo imply any risks?

In spite of the Duolingo course being Russian-Spanish, I am blogging in English language to be able to provide the most of my knowledge and experience as English is still and is going to be the language I can express myself the best beside my mother tongue, Hungarian, of course.

The Russian-Spanish course is the ultimate difficulty level for me among the language trees I have completed so far. It is the most difficult because of Russian and its Cyrillic characters and still unfamiliar looking and hard-to-pronunce and hard-to-read long, tongue-twisting words.

My background with Russian language

I was taught Russian way back in primary school for about 2 years as far as I can remember. Yeah, it was more like having been taught than having learnt Russian language actually, as I did not like the language and our teacher at all. Know, a few years wiser I realize that our teacher, Mrs Lidia was not so bad after all, I just did not like her very much because of the compulsory language being forced on Hungary at that time due to the political situation of that time and, that she was strict and demanded us to learn and behave. Who like strict teachers anyway, who even want to teach and ’force’ us to teach, right? :D

Ol’ skool learning does work, folks!

I remember a lot from my primary school Russian lessons, so, yes, ol’ skool language teaching with its repetitive, mostly frontal and pair work methods do work! Maybe times and attitudes of children, and their parents are changing and they are not much buying these methods, I mean, most of them, as far as my experience as a teacher in my rural primary school experience goes.

Nice award, right? I find Duolingo's desing cool and motivating

A new era of language learning with Duolingo

New times require new methods, and Duolingo is a very motivating, user friendly, innovative, free and effective way of learning languages online (or offline as well if you buy Duolingo Plus).

My way of using Duolingo

To be honest sometimes I was rushing through my Russian-Spanish Duolingo lessons, reading many new words just once in the lesson. It is not good, but I always do practice, so my vocabulary is being strengthened.

The point is that I am testing myself in a way that I learn languages on Duolingo without studying the rules previously and writing out new words in a vocabulary and repeating them, like I had been doing for so many years at school. I can tell you that my approach works for me. It might not be the best, but I enjoy learning this way, and this is of key importance. No matter how great a method is if I do not enjoy the journey of studying. That way the method can not teach me as well as the one I am enjoying.

I use different courses in Duolingo to practise German, Spanish and Russian language
Languages I study with Duolingo

I do not encourage anyone to follow my example of exposing myself to new grammar first barely in the new sentences Duolingo brings me. I think it is up to the person to decide what is best for him or her.

After the completion of the Russian-Spanish tree, I felt totally drained of my energy. (Read more about the challenge of finding the balance in my everyday life in my YouTube video description). I needed a new plan for daily routine still including using Duolingo. After re-thinking (and re-dreaming) my life, I decided to do about half the amount of the Duolingo language studies I have been doing so far.

Duolingo has some serious risks! (funny section)

I became terrified at the thought, that if I continued to go on with the hardcore 33-lesson-a-day-Duolingo-madness, maybe I would grow an owl-head too, LOL! xD

Not even my favourite Ganoderma coffee could cure that. ha-hah!

Duolingo is risky! An owl-head can grow on your neck from using it too much, ha-ha!
Side-effects of Duolingo, LOL!

Okay guys, I am just kidding, you know me! Duo is one of the cutest and most useful owls in the world and I am honoured to be his Padawan. May the Force of Studying Languages at Home be with You! :)

P.S.:

I have taken the liberty to plagiarize my own work and copied this sections from the end of my YouTube video. And it goes like this:

Well, for those of you die-hard enough to read all my gibberish, I have one more important announcement: you have probably been curious about who the hack I can be and searched my websites on Google (you know, those that are annoyingly subtitled in all my videos).

If you become interested in any kind of way, products and business-wise in what I do, I have some good news for you:

You do not need to do what I do.

I mean, you can make better quality videos like I do, you can make worse, or you can decide not to give a flying f...k about making videos at all. It is all up to the individual and what he or she find comfortobale in doing. The emphasis is on ’doing’, acting, if someone wants more from life.

I believe that the not-so-HD quality (to be polite) of my videos can be better duplicated than if I used some really expensive state-of-the-art high tech gismos that are expensive and not all average Joes (or Jerries) can afford to buy them. And here is the point: DXN Ganoderma coffee business is the MLM business of ordinary, everyday people. Not need for all sorts of degrees, investment and to be 'that type' who can sell products or who is a born negotiator. Of course those of you who are lucky enough to be born with great communication or presentation skills and are experts in homeopathy and natural medicine, or are doctors can also be very successful - or not.

Let me say a few more words on this. Being a great teacher, mechanic, trainer etc. does not mean imply that one is gonna be successful in Network Marketing. This is a whole different profession that also has to be learnt. Coming from all sorts of personal and professional life backgrounds give the unique spice to the business, which makes it awesomely exciting.

DXN products and marketing plan works flawlessly, no matter my methods of advetising and branding myself. You also do not have to learn languages to be successful in this business. Speaking one or two is enough, although being adept in more languages is an advantage.

Duolingo Russian-German tree complete 2018 (How I study languages on Duo...

The ’Duolingo-madness’

My Russian-German tree is complete

Some insights and my way of learning using Duolingo, this wonderful, free language learning program

The Russian-German language tree can be considered a ’reverse-tree’ in my case, as I am more familiar with German language as I am with Russian. The term ’language tree’ is used because of the way the Duolingo lessons look like: they resemble a tree in a way.

We use the term ’reverse-tree’ when we set our mother tongue (or the language know better) as the target language and we set the language we want to be more proficient in as the mother tongue. Duolingo asks at the beginning of choosing a course like: ’I am a speaker of …..’ , and that is where you can choose your mother tongue or pretend to be the native speaker, he-he.

Using some hacks to save time to be more effective in Duolingo

After a while, not just in case of Duolingo, but basically when one uses the computer a lot on a daily basis, the need for saving time arises with keyboard shortcuts, making files easier to access, using bookmarks and so on.

(You might consider reading ’The four-hour workweek’ from Tim Ferris as he discusses time saving methods and tools well, along with dozens of useful things. The booktitle might sound like scam at first, but believe me, it is worth reading. I also decided to read it as I though: this must be total bullshit or something groundbreaking, at the latter has proven to be true.)

Cheating is allowed here to spare time from typing

When I get a sentence wrong, I type the correct solution right after making the mistake. This is good because I still have the corrected sentence in front of me in red letters. I copy it and when I get the same sentence again, paste it.

How I cheat in Duolingo the right way
My copy-paste time saving-hack in Duolingo

This copy-paste method can be dangerous if not used correctly. In my case, if I am in a hurry and just want to get my lessons done quickly to go be able to go about my daily routine, I tend to just ’slam’ the copied answer there. Instead of this I focus on the following:

I make sure to always read the correct sentence again when I paste it.

This way, although time is saved from typing, I still learn because I expose myself to the foreign language sentence again. Typing and writing is very useful by the way: we input the most amount of information in our brains with our hands. This I have learnt from my psychology teacher at the University of Miskolc while attending the English teacher training. So, if you are not as lazy as me, just type those words, it is extremely useful, he-he.

Blind-typing is a way to be more effective on Duolingo

To contradict myself a bit in my previously mentioned anti-typing point of view, at the beginning of my Duolingo studies I consiously focused on learning to type without looking at the keyboard. I did this blind-typing practice only when I was completing my Duolingo lessons at first, because it drained a lot of my energy. Slowly getting used to not looling at the keyboard it became less of a challenge. I also have to type a lot building my online Ganoderma medicinal mushroom coffee Network Marketing business. This is why I decided to reduce the time spent with ’punching’ the keyboard where I can avoid it.

Greetings again if you have clicked here from reading my YouTube video description. This is the short detour from learning with Duolingo I was writing about there:

The time and energy saved somewhere can be used in another area

This is true to almost everything, that the time and energy I save when doing something I can use elsewhere effectively. Seconds add up to minutes, and minutes add up to hours and slowly to days. If I only use those extra hours for sleeping, I am doing something well. Here is an example from my life as guy who lives with 3 dogs in an apartment:

The value of time

Having to walk my 3 dogs exactly the same time in any weather every day can make my go crazy and there are days where I waste - yes, it is very cruel to say ’waste’, but that is the truth – my last drop of energy at 10 PM to go out in the cold darkness of the night. I am exactly in this state of mind now when blogging this, and I am really fed up. When I get home at about 22:45, feed them and take their bowls after they ate, at about 11 PM many times I am too awake to go to bed, and this means nowadays staying up until 1-1:30 AM, and getting only about 4 hours of sleep. This is not healthy, I know.

Riding bike with my dogs is my way of providing them exercise
My way of effective dog walking: riding my bike with them 3 times a day

I want to increase my value in the workforce market by improving my skills To break out of this rotten circle, I have to grow my knowledge and learning languages with Duolingo is one way for me to get smarter. If I want to earn more money, namely passive income, I have to make myself more valuable. This is true if I wanted to get another job as well, although that is not my goal. If I earn little money and complain about it, I consider, that this is because I am (the value of my knowledge and skills) worth only as much in the workforce-market.

Why I learn languages with Duolingo?

As I am doing an international business, languages are of key importance to me. As I have written previously in another blog of mine, my motivation for learning languages with Duolingo could be summarized in two points:

1.: I want to understand movies and music better.

This might sound trivial, but hey, everyone has his own issues, right? :) Spanish and Russian in action, maffia, superhero or any kind of movies sound pretty cool, not to speak of Spanish in rap music, which is a real delicacy for me.

2.: International mushroom coffee business

I want to be able to serve my customers and business partners from all parts of the world better. If they are satisfied and successful, I am satisfied and successful, this is the beauty of Multi-level Marketing business.

Saving time with ’speech-to-text input’ method

My goal is to be more effective by saving time from typing. This can also be achieved using ’speech-to-text input’ method, which I have recently discovered. I will show this to you too in another video soon. Read more about me here.

German-English language course completed (my 2018 Duolingo home video)

Note:

My Duolingo English-Russian language tree complete (new home video 2018)

The more
difficult the language,

the sweeter the victory of speaking it.

Read about my thoughts on English-Russian Duolingo course in my YouTube video description.

English-Russian language challenge: one of the most difficult courses for me

Finally I am ready with the tree! I have also refreshed my knowledge by practising again so that all my lessons and topics have a wonderful shiny golden color.

Russian flueny after my Duolingo tree?

Your first question must be:

'Can you speak Russian now?

or

'How fluent are you in Russian after completing this Duolingo course?'

Well, to be honest, first I am happy to be alive after finishing this course. I have not tried to talk in Russian yet, let alone some thoughts and words that haunt my mind. After refreshing my German-Russian tree, we will see. It will take about a week I think beside being an 'apartment-dog-dad'.

What are my improvements in Russian after finishing this Duolingo course?

For the picture to be whole, I tell you that I only do the lessons in Duolingo, I never read the grammatical rules included in them, This is because I want to break the habit of the nicely-working but for me a bit boring 'ol' skool' way of foreign language studies. I am testing it on myself how does relying solely on the Duolingo lessons make me improve in a language.

Some small things that make me happy when I do my Russian Duolingo lessons:

I am very happy when I am able to form a sentence from the jumbled words, It is also great that when I look at words, I can tell their meanings. What is even more crazy cool is that many times I do not have to slow the repetition of the sentence because I can understand what the voice says in Russian.

These are important improvements for me. I believe that these are the starting points of my future Russian-speaking. I do not want to measure my fluency as we cannot really talk about such now at this level. It would only discourage me. Okay, I am not the type who can easily (or in any way) could be discouraged, but I try to be as cunning as a fox in this field too, he-he. :)

I'd rather rejoice in the above mentioned small things as they make me feel more advanced than measuring Russian fluency.

My Duolingo English-German online language course tree is ready

Why and how do I learn langauges with Duolingo

I am ready with my English-German language course on Duolingo

(Scroll down for the topic content of the language tree)

I am very happy because I’ve successfully completed the English-German language tree on Duolingo. ’Language tree’ means the whole online language course. It is called a tree because of
the visual resemblance.

As you’ll see at the end of my short home selfie video, once it is complete and revision and refreshing the lessons is done properly, the whole language tree will have a beautiful golden color. I find these little golden circles representing the different language topics very motivating and pleasant to my eyes. This is true to all language courses on Duolingo.

What motivated me to start my English-German studies on Duolingo?

When I started learning on Duolingo about one and a half years ago, my first language was German. My motivation came indirectly from one of my students. At the time of writing this YouTube video description I am still - but hopefully not for a long time - a teacher of English language at a primary school in Hejőkeresztúr village in Hungary. (That is me in the ninth picture, LOL) The school, the children and my colleagues are great, but I have other plans.

Behold the German language tree on Duolingo.
Duolingo is a very user-friendly online language learning program.

My 14-year-old student had a better German accent and pronunciation than me

So this student of mine, at that time 14 years old spent a few years in Germany with her family. And guess what, she had a great German accent! Better than mine at the age of 41 now. Get it, a 14-year-old Hungarian girl has a better pronunciation of German and almost sounding like a native speaker to me! I am very happy for her, but it kinda kicked me in the butt. I was lazy enough to stop learning German after secondary school, foolish enough to only complete the written part of the intermediate-level state language examination (type B). I was lazy and stupid to complete the A type, the oral part of the intermediate-state German exam when I was in the practice, right after secondary school. I did not really care about this for many years, and honestly it is not really the lack of the certificate that is bothering me now either, but the crappy attitude I had back then.

So, being ashamed and angry of my younger self being such a dumbass, I told myself: ’No way I am going to take this that a 14-year-old student of mine can speak better German after about 2 years than me after about 5 years and having a certificate!’ :D Okay, I was not really angry, I rather wanted to show myself that I could also get better. :)

I registered myself on Duolingo, this wonderful, free online language learning programme we used in the English classes at school as well. I started with one tiny lesson a day, taking about 5 minutes to complete. I did so to make sure I do it every day because this amount of learning did not put too much pressure on me. It would not take away much of my freetime in which I am selling mushroom coffee online to be able to achieve passive income and quit the everyday ratrace and improve my standard of living both financially and the quality and quantity of my spare time.

How many points and lessons do I comlete a day?

Over time I became more motivated and started to increase the number of lessons to complete in Duolingo German course. I have been doing 11 lessons a day for quite a while. First I was doing it on my computer with the desktop version of Duolingo. This version gave 10 XPs (points) for each completed lesson. 11 lessons means 110 XPs on the PC.

All Duolingo lessons are complete.
I do 11 of these golden beauties every day.

How do the Duolingo points (XP) motivate me?

I set my goal to 110 XPs because I told myself that it is like achieving 110% and it makes me feel a really cool guy, LOL! :) But seriously, to me it is a good motivation to see I am achieving more than 100%. It is a psychological hack I find very good.

What is the advantage of the desktop version of Duolingo?

Learning on the desktop version of Duolingo helped me to learn typing without looking at the keyboard. I intentionally trained and forced myself to type ’blindly’ when I was learning German. I did this at first only when I used Duolingo, again to avoid too much pressure and obligation, this way avoiding or reducing the possibility of quitting.

What is the disadvantage of using Duolingo app on a smartphone?

After a while I tried the Android app of Duolingo on my smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. It was great no to be bound by my PC and being able to do my English-German course even when I was not home. This is the point in having a smartphone, right? It also saved my a lot of time for my acitivities and Ganoderma coffee business work at home.

I was really doing Duolingo hardcore by then. I took on more languages. This means that now my studies take about 2 hours a day. Imagine, staring, focusing on the tiny screen of my smartphone for such a long time! I started to feel that if I kept on doing this, my eyesight would deteriorate soon for sure. I had to change for a bigger screen, to a tablet.

Why did I need a tablet to learn on Duolingo when I already have a smartphone and a computer? I have already told you about the problem I had with my smartphone’s small screen. But hey, I could have continued to do my Duolingo courses on my PC, right? Yes, sure. But by then I have experienced the difference between the desktop and the Android version of Duolingo.

What is the advantage of the Android version of Duolingo?

I find Duoling Android application more effective.

I find the Android app version better. It allows me to see the words of the sentences and it is more faster, more effective to memorize everything this way than with the PC version. The other thing is that I became sick and tired of typing. I type a lot every day during my online work with my DXN business, so I wanted to decrease the time spent typing as well. Being more effective because seeing the words laid out in front of me was the main reason. Oh yeah, I definitely do not want to lose my eyesight because of focusing on a small smartphone screen, so it was as important as effectiveness.

11 Duolingo lessons equal 110 XPs on desktop
The app version of Duolingo gives more XPs

What is a reverse language tree? Why is a reversed Duolingo tree good?

For final words, I find it great to complete Duolingo tree in a reversed way. It is also referred to as
’reverse-tree’. This means that for example, in my case where my native tongue was set to English ( I am a Hungarian dude by the way) and the language I learnt was German, I switched my native language to German and started to learn English. I find some extra sentences and words every now and then when I do a reversed Duolingo tree. It is like re-doing the language course in a slightly different way. I definitely recommend this to you as well.

I wish you a lot of success in language learning! Remember: rather do a little every day, but really do this little every day instead of setting a very high daily goal that puts too much pressure on you! Beside being hard work, language learning should be fun! :)
